Brother Labré, C.F.X. (Arthur J. Dillon), 83, died Wednesday evening, May 3, 2017 at the Brentwood Rehab. Center in Danvers. He was a member of the Congregation of the Brothers of Saint Francis Xavier for over sixty-five years. Born in Brooklyn, NY on May 16, 1933, he was the son of the late Arthur and Frances (McCauley) Dillon. He was raised in Brooklyn, attending Holy Cross School where he was first introduced to the Xaverian Brothers. He graduated from Saint Joseph Juniorate in Peabody in 1951, entering the Xaverian Brothers and taking the religious name Brother Labré. A 1957 graduate of the Catholic University in Washington, D.C., Brother Labré later received a master’s degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1966 and did post-graduate studies at the Sangre de Cristo Center in Santa Fe. A social studies and French teacher, his teaching apostolate began at St. Xavier High School in Louisville, KY in 1957. He returned to his native Brooklyn in 1963 to teach at Nazareth High School, where he was assigned until 1975. After brief teaching assignments at Mount St. Joseph High School in Baltimore and Xavier High School in Middletown, CT, he retired from classroom teaching in 1981 and assisted in school and community activities, first at St. Joseph Regional High School in Montvale, NJ and then at Xavier in Middletown. He had been a resident of Xaverian House in Danvers since 2012. In addition to his brothers in religion, Brother Labré leaves a sister, Patricia Cairney of Nokomis, FL and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters, Teresa and Frances Dillon. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Mon., May 8, 2017 at 3:30PM in the Chapel of Saint John’s Preparatory School, 72 Spring St., Danvers. Burial will follow in Xaverian Brothers Cemetery, Danvers. Visitation is prior to the Mass from 2:30-3:15PM. In lieu of flowers, donations in Brother Labré’s memory may be made to the Xaverian Brothers Retirement Fund, 4409 Frederick Ave., Baltimore, MD 21229.
